I always keep some canned filling on hand for making campfire pies,
and if I don't use it up, the remainder is good for topping oatmeal or
angel food cake, or added to an apple pie or cobbler filling. I like
the color it gives to apple pie, plus the contrasting flavors and
textures.

But if I didn't have any canned filling on hand and wanted to add
cherries to a brownie mix, I'd just add some chopped dried
reconstituted cherries. I keep those around for making almond/cherry
butter cookies.

P.S. The one addition all boxed brownie mixes sorely need is more
chocolate, either cocoa powder or melted chocolate. They tend to cheap
out on that chocolate part of the ingredients.
