I have always trimmed them. And it's not just for presentation. I'm sure
that you know that you must put the two flat sides together so the top
doesn't crack. If you get enough height on that cake, it's going to be
rounded. So one of two things would have to happen. Either you put a big
ring of frosting around where the cake will sit so it will sit flat, or you
trim it. *shrugs*
