I think it all depends on when you take it down. It does seem a bit silly
if you're one of the people who takes it down the day after Christmas, but
if not, it may not be at all silly. I like to take mine down on Epiphany
(January 6). Usually I put it up about a week before Christmas.
Of course it also depends on whether you have a live tree or a plastic one.
I much prefer live trees, and living in Washington State, that's not a
problem. OTOH, if you lived in Arizona, or much of central Australia, a
live tree isn't very practical. Using the plastic gives you a lot more
flexibility in when the tree goes up and down, along with much less cleanup
and maintenance. A live tree, OTOH, gives you a lot more flexibility in
terms of tree size, shape, and type, as well as giving the house a great
aroma.

Wow! Now *that's* early!
As to the OP, what does your family *like* to do? If they are "non-
talkers", are they then "doers" - people who like to be involved in
activity? If so, perhaps something outdoors would be appropriate. Drive out
to the country for a walk, go skiing, sledding, play football - there are
many possibilities depending on your location and the weather.
If they're neither talkers nor doers, the likelihood is that what they'll
want to do is "zone out". One of the best options for this kind of crowd is
the movie marathon. Rent as many titles as you think you can stand, and
watch 'till everybody falls asleep or goes home.
