The incredible depths of my perception allows me to tell the difference between some old geezer on the side of the road clutching his chest and a young person standing clueless next to a Subaru.

Broken timing belts were a problem with this car of that vintage so it's a pretty reasonable assumption. They had two timing belts which pretty much double your chances of breaking a belt. If you were lucky, you'd break the belt which didn't drive the distributor which would allow you to limp home on two cylinders.
