When I used tape to do this it was just regular scotch tape. And I
only used this method a few times, just to make sure I didn't cut them
too short.

That sounds like a nice way to trim bangs.

I don't have to cut mine at all any more as they are *finally* long
enough that I can get all my hair in a scrunchie. I've been working on
this for a year and a half.
