I agree that it would be super weird for some stranger to come
up to my door and put their mail in the box. I can see in a
rural area where there are no mailboxes for miles and post
offices are not convenient, either, just put it in the box at
the end of the driveway and put the flag up.

But I don't know what's up with the original scenario, lots
of people don't have mailboxes but just PO boxes.
