Services to the king included, supplying money and armed men. More
services to king = more land = more power to gouge tithes and taxes from
the poor.

Ranks like EJ's knighthood are no more than a title, they no longer
carry any privileges (such as power or land), but they are conferred for
services rendered and money raised, just like the old days. EJ's was
for his charitable work and services to music (er, making money for the
Treasury)

I can't think what EJ ever gouged from me but I've probably benefited
from the huge taxes he's paid to the Treasury.
