The expedition was more or less a failure. When we reached the site, it was as if the sound was coming from everywhere. I had always suspected that the sound emanated from the dense patch that lay before us but it's impossible to say for sure. We reached a consensus that this "thing" was a large cricket of the most sonically persistent kind. In the end, all we could do was uproot an undesirable weed and take photos of a rather attractive plant for later identification.
Last night the sound was not to be heard. All was quiet. Could it be because we had disturbed the beast's lair? Perhaps it had moved on to escape the coming rains of the monsoon season. Hopefully, we shan't be hearing him for a long while.
