Beavers are making a comeback in southern Ontario, and farmers and other
property owners are fighting them off. I first saw signs of them abut
two years ago in a nearby pond. Now they are in almost every pond around.
The first ones were in a pond at the back of the farm behind us. I was
back there walking the dog when I saw one had fallen a poplar tree with
about a 12 inch trunk. The tree was on the ground and a second one was
chewed about one quarter of the way through. The next day the second
tree was down along with a third one. By the third day, all three trees
has been trimmed down, cut up and hauled into the pond for the winter
food supply.
That pond was about 20 yards from the property line and on the other
side of the line was my neighbour's tree nursery. Farmer John hired a
trapper to dispose of the beavers.
