A staple probably could start a fire in a microwave. It can arc between
the folded-under ends of the wire. The bent staple forms a little loop
antenna. It doesn't have to be near the sides of the oven to cause trouble.

It would probably be OK to try it if you watch if closely and turn off
the power if it starts sparking.
