They vary by sanctioning body. FBA (Florida BBQ Assoc.) requires a 4 hour
seminar that includes judging several turn in boxes in 2 or more categories.
Several FBA contests including this weekend's Funcook have a judge's seminar
on the Friday afternoon prior to the contest. That makes you a trained
judge. Once you have judged your first FBA contest you are then a certified
judge. You must judge at least once per year in order to maintain your
certification. MIM (Memphis in May) training is a full day with a written
test at the beginning and the end (same test) and actual on-site and blind
judging. You then have to judge 2 MIM contests to be certified. KCBS has a
certified judge's school that is usually held on the Thursday or Friday
before a KCBS event. I don't know what their rules are but you can visit the
