It isn't perfect. He uses a herbivore, not a frugivore, for comparison.
As for a comparison to the other primates. Remember that none of them
became as smart as we did. If our lineage continued eating like them, we
would still have their level of intelligence.
Back to fruit. As I pointed out earlier, fruits are supposed to be eaten,
but the seeds not digested. Coffee beans are a fruit seed. Then the reason
why some berries have thorns, is to discourage consumption by mammals.
Mammals would digest their small seeds. They want only birds to eat their
berries.
