Don't know, don't care. It's just shorthand for 'newcomer.' It carries
a connotation, I think, of one who's not familiar with the rules of a
particular road.

Protocol seems to vary with the groups -- I read a couple where it is
very common for a newbie to the group to introduce self. Other places I
don't see a self-introduction, per se, but perhaps a remark about having
lurked for a while but not ever posted before. Not a big deal, AFAICS.
