No. A casserole is a combination of ingredients (meat, vegetables,
starches), typically bound with some sort of sauce, baked in a
dish with sides.

They look more like stews to me, but they do satisfy the definition.

Sadly, in the U.S., quite a few casseroles are made using canned
soup as the sauce. Brainwashing by the industrial food complex.

Probably the most popular casseroles in the U.S. are (in no particular
order):

Baked macaroni and cheese
Lasagne
Green-bean casserole (which we've seen discussed here numerous times)
Scalloped potatoes
Tuna-noodle casserole

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, because I'm not a big fan of
casseroles.

Generally starchy, inexpensive, and filling. Popular when we Baby
Boomers were coming up, families had a lot of mouths to feed,
and food was relatively more expensive than it is now.
