I've done some further digging on this, and it seems that Avast has
intentionally broken the signature delimiter to circumvent email and
news clients from automatically removing the sig from any replies.

How decent of them to disregard long established protocols, all in a
bid to get some cheap advertising. Never did like Avast anyway, there
are and have always been better choices out there.
