It is pretty much a doomed society as a result of years of corruption
and incompetent leadership. They have denuded their forests to make
charcoal for fuel so there is nothing to hold back the soil. The silt
has clogged their waterways and destroyed their fishery. There was a
devastating hurricane there last month but there was little damage to
the buildings that had been constructed with the billions of dollars in
reconstruction funding they got after the earthquake because there had
been nothing built with all that money they had been given.
