Neither did I. But that doesn't mean allergy didn't exist; just that
it wasn't recognised; medical diagnosis and treatment back then, was
very limited.

My mother's generation all knew women who lost "sickly" children, or
whose babies and small children had "croup" ( untreated asthma),
sometimes fatal).
