I do like the candied version too!

A neighbor in Sasebo (Military stationed there) had a version that used
crushed red-hot candies mixed in and was similar to the blog recipe
above in most other ways.

It's a funny food, like Okonomiyaki, that has a bazillion variations
yet is recognizable in all it's forms.
