I did my best to convince him to play the correct way but for some reason, he wanted to play the wrong way. In the end, he picked up a beautiful guitar and I strung it up for him to play lefty. Beats me why he insisted on playing like this. It's tough being a lefty guitar player in a world of guitars.

Beats me if young folks will know much about these players. My guess is that Kurt Cobain would be more familiar to today's generation. Jimi's dad wanted his son to play the correct way but that never took hold, and the rest is history.
As a practical matter, playing lefty means you can't pick up a guitar and start playing - like everybody else can. Buying a new lefty guitar can be more expensive OTOH, selling a used lefty can be somewhat harder to do. Your pool of buyers is greatly reduced. The one advantage that I can think of is that a used lefty guitar will be discounted some.
Take it from me, just learn to play the correct way.
