The ashtray was to shield the bridge pickup from stray electromagnetic radiation. Most people just took that off when they got their Tele and then lost it. Those old Teles had a crude, primitive, look to the bridges because all that was supposed to be hidden.
The pedal steel trick is easy on a Tele because of the location and shape of the volume pot knob. I used to do it with my Firebird. It's not easy because of the location and shape of the volume pot knob. That was quite a stretch.
