Catfish are bottom feeders (they are akin to Gary, lol...), hence the
stench. I grew up by the Mississippi, catfish caught by the commercial
fisherfolk were placed into big troughs of circulating fresh water and fed
food pellets for a period of time to purge all the crap. Same with carp...

That is true, however we have had many catfish in our lives before that, and
never have I smelled something like that in any fish, and hope never to
again.
