Yes, and IIRC, was originally paid in advance of the meal "To Insure
Promptness".
Personally, I would be happier if tips were abolished and restaurant food
prices and server wages were raised accordingly. Servers receiving a
decent salary and not depending on the whim of the patron would probably
offer more dependable and good service.
It'll never happen, but the current and long-standing fashion is silly.
Where I used to live, it was customary to tip supermarket clerks for
accompanying you to your car with your groceries and loading them in.
One local supermarket chain, in particular, had very explicit signs
indicating "no tipping". They paid their clerks a higher wage to
compensate for this service.
