It was the law here in Germany to change my name when we got married;
putting my maiden name first was the best I could do. Either that, put it
last (hyphenated, too) or lose it altogether.

I don't think it was the law many ago when I got married, but I often see
now that people are retaining their maiden name.

My doctor is a case in point. We know she married but her name never
changed,
