My father was never a prisoner of war but he mentioned he saw the poor
villagers he encountered in Vietnam would eat. And in Korea before
that. Cooking over braisers in small huts.
You don't want rats to get at your grain or vegetables. So you kill
them. If you don't have any other source of meat, you skin and roast
them. A source of protein that didn't have to be hunted down when there
were enemy troops around.
