You forgot the Japanese. Americans remember them for the attack on
Pearl Harbor, but that was just a side show to their aggression across
the Pacific. They had gambled, thinking that knocking out the US Pacific
Fleet would scare them out of interfering in the bigger picture. The US
had been putting pressure on them over their activities in Mongolia
and China. We have all heard about their treatment of POWs, and they
had a special hatred for Americans. In the Chinese city of Nanking they
systematically brutalized and murdered close to 300,000 Chinese
civilians, about twice the number of Japanese deaths in the two nuclear
attacks combined.
