Seems like they have waned in recent years but most nicknames were a
term of endearment or from a physical attribute of a person. I've been
introduced to people with their nickname and it took a long time to
finally find out their real name.
Years ago where my FIL worked there were three guys working together and
all were named Tom. To avoid confusion, one went by Dick, the other
Harry.
Some people don't like their given name and choose to use a Nick.
Just look at the typical newsgroup and you see few real names.
