There are stemless wine glasses. You can even get them at Dollar Tree.
They do work better than a typical water tumbler in that you get the
aromatics better and yes, it does make a difference with a good wine,
not so much with the stuff in boxes.

One disadvantage, if you are at a party and hold the glass it will warm
faster than holding by a stem. At a table, no big deal.

Some wine snobs have different size and shaped glasses for each type of
wine, Burgundy, Cabernet, etc. I certainly can't tell the difference.
