That is the most common usage, but that does not mean it is the only use.

I took a car to the store today. Most people would think I took an
automobile, but I could have taken a trolley car, train car, tram car,
or elevator car.

Cole = cabbage Slaw = salad. Coleslaw = cabbage salad Just slaw
alone can be any salad.
