you can still buy saurkraut in gallon jugs (for not that
much $) and those jars make excellent storage containers.
i use them for the bulk beans that i grow once i've got
them dried and sorted. another relatively inexpensive way
to get half gallon sized jars is to check out the canning
section at the store (when they finally get restocked
again). $12 for 6 jars is well worth it (and they are
great for canning the bulk tomatoes we grow too when we're
processing them).
