Salt to taste is only relavant if the cook is the only one eating.

Salted butter already contains more than enough salt, let alone the
salt in canned cream-of soup. Forget the kosher salt, any weirdo
needs a salt lick pass the shaker.

Same applies to pepper, civilized people set their table with
pepper/salt shakers.
