Last I heard they were protected in the wilderness areas of Canada
because they're slow, stupid, fairly easyt to attract (they're nuts
for salt) and reasonably nutritious. Sort of a natural emergency
ration on-the-hoof.
Never had the opportunity, myself. Wouldn't volunteer to pluck one
unless I were desperate.
