It sounds as though you may be attempting actually to make this cake
edible, or perhaps even inviting. According to my British friends, a
truly Traditional Christmas cake cannot be edible under any
circumstances.

So who is this "Delia Smith", and why has this person set out to subvert
time-honoured British culture in such a devious way?
