Sure. And I'll bet your average bear tosses it unless gravy's planned
and its one's habit to use it in the gravy making. My sister (a fine
cook) does not use it -- she thinks it adds too much starch to the
gravy. Whatever.

I know -- and am guilty of not keeping it around for such a purpose.
Unless I'm making gravy, I drain the potatoes over the sink drain.
