Why is that bizarre?? Walk into ANY grocery store in the South, mom &
pop corner market to the warehouse sized ones and that's what you will
see on the shelf. That is what is plainly marked on the bags - corn
meal. Not corn flour, not 'we don't know what to call it but it
magically makes cornbread', not 'used to be tortilla chips and now it
makes cornbread'. It's corn meal, it's proper name, plain and simple.
Go into any grist mill, used primarily now as tourist attractions, and
they will tell you "We're grinding wheat for flour" or "we're grinding
corn for meal."
