Severe allergic reactions can cause what is called anaphylactic shock.

Not pretty. If you don't get a nice big dose of Epinephrine, they may
need to put you on a breathing machine (intubation).
Bee stings and peanut allergies are the two most common things to cause
this. Death can happen pretty fast.
This is why some food allergies are nothing to screw around with. ;-)
