Thanks, Carol. My mom had a rule of thumb, and it was all about
proportion; 2 layers - 7-inch cake, 3 layers - 8-inch cake, 4-layers - 9-
inch cake. The height to width ratio just seems right. There were only a
few 9-inch 4-layer cakes that she made.
