Here are all of the details. Tokaji Aszu Esszencia Anno 1906. Bottled by
Tokajhegyaljai Allami Gazdasagi Borkombinat Satjoraljaujhely. 0.5 L.
Export Monimpex Budapest. Shipped by Clink Vaults, Ltd., U.K. Imported
by Julliene Import Co., Chicago. Bought at Chicago Wine Company auction
many years ago. I hope I have not butchered the Hungarian - the text is
in script , somewhat difficult to read, and my knowledge of Hungarian is
nil.
I have had Tokaji Aszu Esszencia 1964, but it in no way compares with
the quality of this 1906. The 1906 is a deep old gold color. The
bouquet is room-filling when you open it. There is a complex mix of
fruits with dried apricots and peaches coming to mind. There are hints
of many other fruits, spice, honey, and brandied fruit. This follows
throgh in the taste that nearly explodes in intensity in your mouth with
only a few drops. The wine seems to coat the mouth as cream does. There
is enough acid to balance the extreme sweetness. The aftertaste lingers
for many minutes. Just a few drops make you salivate. The 1959 Yequem is
one of the more powerful and rich Yquems of modern times. Yet this 1906
makes the 1959 Yquem seem weak on comparison. I have this wine stored
under ultra high purity nitrogen and will enjoy it for many days. For a
wine of this extreme intensity, a one ounce serving is about right. And
keep in mind that this wine is an Aszu Esszencia. A pure Esszencia would
be even richer and more concentrated. Fortunately I bought 2 bttles of
this, so there still remains one to enjoy several years from now.
