A couple of other posters made good suggestions. If you can't decline
the invitation then, eat before you go, that way, you won't be
disappointed by the quality of the food and be able to just nibble at
one or two things that appeal (if there are any things that appeal).
This is also a good strategy to avoid those extra pounds that we all
tend to put on during this holiday eating season. Show up, have one
drink and some token munchies (if you can stomach them), circulate and
talk to everyone you must or want to talk to. Then, if you're not
enjoying yourself, leave.

I have friends of varying income levels and have attended all kinds of
parties, including some of the nature described. I go to see my
friends, not for the food. But I do eat something first, if I suspect
that the food will be less than remarkable (or not to my taste).
That way I can just munch on the pretzels or carrots (if they have
them) and enjoy the company.
