I've called when the shipping has delayed so long to get it out,
delivery will occur after I leave town. I've called UPS or Fed Ex before
the package even gets into the state, and they've said that only the
shipper can modify delivery; otherwise, they must attempt delivery at
least once. For things that don't have a signature requirement, I've
told them that if they leave it at my door and it isn't there when I
finally get back, I'll hold them responsible. They didn't care.
