It differs from state to state. Here in Indiana, there isn't sales tax
on groceries, except for soda pop and candy. And ready-to-eat foods
from the deli counter, such as complete sandwiches, although that does
vary sometimes, depending on what the ready-to-eat food is.
Sales tax applies to any non-food purchases at the grocery store, for
things like plastic wrap and magazines. The sales tax is 6%, so it's
pretty easy to figure out how much will be due if you're keeping track
of what you're buying.
