You can do a "quick soak" by putting the beans in water (in a pot) on
the stove, bringing to a boil, and boiling, partially covered (allow
enough air to prevent boil over) for one minute.
Then, turn off the heat and let stand, covered, for one hour.
The beans are then ready to cook as per recipe.
The shot of heat helps the water penetration.
