Many years ago when there were far fewer regulations, there was a
slaughterhouse on the road leading to my grandmother's home in the country.
It was set at least 400-500 feet off the road, but in the summer the stench
was overpowering. It is said that the nearby creek ran red with blood,
since they disposed of waste there. Luckily, I was far too young to make
the connection between the slaughterhouse and hamburgers! :-)
