The collar on mine started to loosen during routine cleaning and finally
slid off. It was a good thing, actually, because it allowed me to REALLY
clean the darn thing. It's amazing just how much crud gets under there.

The collar is no longer attached as firmly as it was when the mixer was new,
but it slides up there into place pretty easily and (for now, anyway) stays
put until I want it to come loose again. It may help to clean not just the
area above the orbiting head but the inside of the ring as well. That might
clear things enough to enable it to seat again.

But honestly, I think the ring is there only as a nameplate. It doesn't
significantly protect the orbiting head as far as I can see, and when the
day comes that mine won't seat anymore I will probably simply remove it to
get it out of the way.
