I use baking soda when I'm making toffee brittle or peanut brittle and
definitely a couple of Tablespoonfuls of butter. And the mixture has to be
at the hard-crack stage. OP doesn't say if she's trying to make something
"sal****er" taffy-like or a brittle toffee.
