Default Making hot oatmeal in crockpot

Last night I saw directions for making hot oatmeal in a crockpot and so
I tried it thinking that it would be easier making hot oatmeal good for
several days instead of making individual portions each morning. It
called for 2 cups of steel-cut oatmeal and 6 cups of water left
overnight for 10 hours at the low setting. The hot oatmeal turned out
fine, and I now have enough for 4 more mornings to be warmed up in the
microwave. The only drawback was that a hard layer of burnt oatmeal was
left on the bottom and sides of the crockpot, and took some effort to
scrub off. Is there some way to prevent this from happening the next
time? Thanks for any advice/suggestions.
