San Diego Cookin' Food list
As if the Bartos didn't do enough by hosting the cookin' they made.
Teriyaki Chicken Wings
Scallops Wrapped in Bacon
Apple Tart from Jacques Pépin
I was also one of the fortunate few that got a tour of their garden. I
met the &*%$#@ scarecrow. It is a rotary sprinkler that is motion
activated, so when I walked further into the garden I got quite a
surprise.
Jamie got wet also and I almost trampled her into the tomatoes trying
to get out of the spray.
I don't know how they have the time to do all they do, and still host
a cookin'.
Katherine has a sinister side though, she didn't warn us about the
scarecrow and seemed quite amused by it all, but I saw through all the
profuse apologizing. ;-)
Katherine's parents participated also.
Joan and (rats, I forgot his name) Katherine's dad brought
Black Bean, Corn and Rice Salad
which was beautifully presented in a bowl lined with lettuce
Smoked Chicken Sausage from Trader Joe's
with Apple and Chardonnay Cranberry Mustard.
When Joan was making out the index card to place by her food we
couldn't remember if Chardonnay had two n's or one so we snuck into
the Bartos well stocked (as in crammed full) wine cellar that they had
built into their kitchen cabinets looking for a bottle of Chardonnay
to double check the spelling. Some nice wines in there.
Jamie Utter
Grilled Chicken with Pomegranate Glaze
Tart Cherry Chutney
Pear Tartan
I think the Pear Tartan was a Jacques Pépin goodie also
She also brought DH Brian. How much fun is he. He's always been the
life of the party. Couldn't think of a cookin' without him.
Jamie you are a treasure and no the chicken was not dry.
Debra Fritz
Salmon roll ups
Drunken Tri-Tip
Summer Pudding
We dubbed the Tri-Tip drunken at the party. She marinated it in beer
and some spices, she'll post the recipe later. My DH was tapping her
on her left shoulder to get her to look the other way while he was
snitching slices as fast as he could over her right shoulder..
She's waaayyy too smart for that and caught him in the act.
Debra's trip down was not one she'd like to repeat, it took twice as
long as it should have. We are so glad she made it safe and sound.
Terry "Squeaks" Burd
Gazpacho
Beef Jerkey
Pork Satays w/Peanut Dipping Sauce
Bittersweet Chocolate Marquise w/ Cherry Sauce
She out did herself. I'm going to steal her idea of bringing a warming
tray to serve the food on. The dipping sauce stayed nice and creamy.
I think the Bartos inherited another warming tray this year. I think
she accidently left it behind.
Dimitri
Cold Red-Oak Smoked Tri-Tip
w/ Blue Cheese Horseradish Marinade
Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork
w/ Pico de Gallo and Tortillas
It was so nice to see Dimitri again and to meet his wife and daughter.
He was at the cookin' redah and husband hosted in Ocean Beach a couple
of years ago.
Very nice man, and very nice family.
Rich and Patti McCormack
Spicy Pork Kabobs w/ Moorish flavors
Harissa Sauce
Kabob recipe on william.sonoma.com
Harissa Sauce recipe on epicurious.com
Rich was suffering terribly from gout and walking with a cane, but a
true foodie showed up anyway. You both would have been missed, thanks
for coming and bringing such great food.
Jim P. our resident brew master
Garnet Yams w/ butter, pecans and cinnamon
Jim was the first to host a San Diego Cookin'. He hosted our first two
cookins' so he has a special place in our hearts.
He is a friend of Charliam who couldn't make it due to being ill.
Koko
Saute of Peppers
Summer rolls
I usually bring more but DH was in the hospital that week. A very bad
reaction to a new medication, all is well now though.
If I forgot someone please forgive me.
I want to get this posted tonight. I hope others that were there will
fill in what I forgot.
There was one ice chest full of beer and bottles of wine and another
with water and sodas.
I don't think anyone got to play with rattlesnakes this year. They
probably overheard us last year talking about what to marinate a
rattlesnake in and hid this year.
I hope those rfc'rs that haven't hosted a cookin yet would have one.
If you are uncomfortable having "strangers" in your home you can host
one in a park or other public place.
I have not met one rfc'er at a cookin' that I wouldn't want in my
home....well...maybe one. o.k... then there was...and.
Best to all
