I really doubt that has anything to do with why they like it. Being
that cancer is such a LONG-TERM process, I doubt they'd connect any
beneficial properties it may have that way. If it's popular as some
sort of folk medicine that actually works, it must be for something
that it can act almost immediately on - like quinine-containing bark
does for malaria.
