I don't think it related to right, but it's hard to tell. When I lived
there, I thought I heard it as "red" (could certainly have been "ret")
but everybody understood the expression.
I also liked "gum bands" for what I learned as "rubber bands" and what
a Californian friend calls "elastic bands."
