You're way off... For most, it doesn't have to do with where you live or
what kind of food you can afford. It has to do with meeting several basic
social norms, such as removing the trash from your home--whatever type of
home that may be, using the toilet to go to the restroom--rather than the
corner of the bedroom, and bathing/brushing of teeth. Assuming one is
mentally sound, meeting those tasks aren't that hard.. I think I've just
described "basic hygiene", but you get the point...

I've only really met one family ever I would consider "white trash". They
didn't take their trash out--instead, let it pile up in one room of their
house. They didn't always use the toilet, but would sometimes go in the
corner of a room... They didn't take baths and didn't brush their
teeth--one bragged that it had been three years since they'd brushed their
teeth. Sadly, these people knew better and just didn't want to put forth
the effort... They were all mentally sound... they just didn't care.
