My mother was also a good cook, but I don't think she learned it as a
kid. My parents always used to joke about how my mother didn't read the
directions. I didn't understand the joke until the last year or so (my
mother has been dead for thirty years, so you can tell I'm a little
slow). My mother was a war bride from Germany, and when she came to the
US she spoke no English. No wonder she didn't read the directions, they
were in a language she didn't know!

My father didn't cook much when I was a kid, but when my mother died, he
had to learn quickly or starve.
